Winter storm Blair made its way through the U.S. earlier this week, covering areas from Kansas to the Atlantic with heavy snow, ice and strong wind gusts.
In Macoupin County, snow began falling late Saturday evening and continued until Monday morning. While snow amounts differ, the National Weather Service reported snowfall in Macoupin County between 7-12 inches. There were also reports of snow drifts reaching several feet in height from various sources. The I-55 exit 60 was, at one point, shut down due to snow drifts covering the road.
Crews worked throughout the storm to plow roads but high winds impeded their efforts to keep the roads clear of snow. People were asked to remain at home and not travel unless necessary due to the danger on the roads. Many businesses and schools closed for the duration and immediate aftermath of the storm.
The snowfall and wind died down considerably by Monday, providing many children with an opportunity for some sledding or other fun in the snow and many adults the chance to break out their shovels, snow blowers and plows.
