Big Boy Steam Locomotive to arrive in Macoupin County

On Saturday, July 18, train enthusiasts and others from the area will have the opportunity to witness the world’s largest and most powerful steam locomotive. In commemoration of America’s 250th birthday, and in celebration of our nation’s industrial revolution, the world’s largest and most powerful steam locomotive will be traversing the nation in July. The “Big Boy” steam locomotive is among twenty-five steam locomotives that Union Pacific built beginning in 1941 to haul heavy cargo across the country. This tour is part of the historic “Heartland of America” coast-to-coast journey and is an once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the steam locomotive.
Two events are scheduled in the area to celebrate this powerful locomotive and offer viewing opportunities. Girard will be hosting a party on the square called “Steam on the Square” all day, 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be food trucks, vendors, music, and much more.“Big Boy” will leave Springfield at around 11:15 a.m. traveling on the Amtrak route and Union Pacific’s mainline, and will be arriving in Girard at the Center Street Crossing at around 12 p.m. The locomotive will be on display until 12:30 p.m.
The other event will be at the Carlinville Moose Lodge #1216 at 801 W. Pine Street. They will host a “Big Boy Steam Engine Celebration.” There will be an observation area on the west side of the Lodge to watch the locomotive pass by on the Amtrak tracks after 12:30 p.m. until around 1 p.m. The locomotive will not be stopping in Carlinville. One will be able to purchase $5 hot dogs in recognition of National Hot Dog Day, and cold drinks. There will also be outdoor family activities.
