The meeting began with recognizing Rachel Leggett, a graduate of Carlinville High School, who received the Girl Scouts Gold Award last August, the highest honor one can earn in Girl Scouts. Her project consisted of planting native plants in the berms at the Carlinville Hospital to assist five different pollinators. Kristi Dunnagan, who was filling in for Larry Schmidt, presented Rachel with a certificate recognizing her achievements.
Guests
Andrea Duncan told the Board and other attendees about the Jubilee events on June 26 and the July 4 programs. On July 4, the Declaration of Independence will be read. Also, the members of the General George Rogers Clark Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will be present, presenting the different flags.
James Cloud explained to the Board the political theories that share an alternative reality. He mentioned that if Illinois were to split into two states out of spite toward Chicago, one would have to realize the new state would have less money and would face more financial problems due to the state’s debt. He also mentioned that the only way to effectively separate the state is if both the Illinois and the US General Assembly approve it.
Lori Fuller supports the Illinois Separation Referendum because the majority of the money flows from Southern Illinois to Chicago. One example is the gasoline tax, 40 percent of the money from the tax goes to Chicago and Cook County, while 15 percent is for Southern Illinois to use on their roads and bridges. She feels the money the state spends on universities and prisons is mainly used by Cook County residents. She feels the voters should be able to voice their opinion.
