Carlinville High School presented their 46th Annual musical, “Mary Poppins” on March 20th and 21st at the high school gym. The musical is based on the story of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney Film. The Director for the musical was Michael Morrison, Assistant Director was Madi Whittington, and Jessica Ryan was the Choreographer. The musical has catchy songs and lively dancing. The story line explores the themes of family, imagination, and the importance of childhood.

The story of Mary Poppins begins on Cherry Tree Lane, London in the year 1910. The Banks family is struggling with their unruly children and having issues of keeping a nanny. The current nanny, Katie Nanna (played by Madalyn Quarton) leaves because she is overwhelmed and upset with the unruly children. The children, Jane (played by Avery Troutwine) and Michael (played by Cash Vinyard, who is in the fifth grade), wrote an advertisement for “The Perfect Nanny” but their father, George Banks (played by Cady Vinyard) tears it up and burns the paper in the fireplace. The mother, Winefred Banks (played by Catherine DeLong) does not know what to do with the children without there being a nanny.

The Banks’ house is run by a house keeper and cook named Mrs. Brill (played by Charlee Dugger) and humorous sidekick of a house boy, Robertson Ay (played by Lucas Wieties). Mrs. Brill is overworked and is always complaining that the house is understaffed. Robertson Ay is lazy, sleepy and never seems to get anything correct.

Mary Poppins (played by Hannah Truax) magically arrives floating in with her umbrella and introduces herself as “practically perfect in every way.” She immediately takes charge of the children leading them on different adventures that teaches them valuable life lessons.

Mary is extraordinary and strange. She is neat and tidy who always means what she says. The carpet bag she carries is magical that is able to hold everything imaginable including a coat tree and a full pot of tea. Mary said she will stay with the children until the wind changes.

The Banks’ neighbors include Miss Lark (played by Chloe Vinyard) who treats her dog as if he were her child and Admiral Boom (played by Houston Turley) who is a retired Navy man.
