The Carlinville School Board approved a $6.7 million tax levy at a 5.21% increase at its meeting last Monday. A truth in taxation hearing was required at the December meeting due to a 5% increase over the prior year’s extension. Last year’s extension was $6,368,165.62. The certificate of tax levy will be filed with the county clerk by the end of the month.
The district’s business manager Heather DeNeve said they’re not likely to collect that much and the reason it’s over 5% is they’re uncertain of the new construction figure. She said there has been discussion with the city of what they’re going to do with their TIF districts. She said the district wanted to make sure it covered enough funds should those TIF districts be dissolved or changes be made to them that affect the district’s ability to collect taxes.
“If things come in as they’re saying they will, it will be more like 3.3 or 3.5%,” she said.
