Margie Deffenbaugh

Margie “Marge” Deffenbaugh, 93, of Chatham, passed away on Sept. 14, 2025, at her home.

She was born on Sept. 27, 1931, in Sorento, the daughter of Albert and Virginia (Sloan) Reed.

Marge graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949 and attended Eastern Illinois University, Blackburn, and Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, earning a master’s degree. She went on to work as an English teacher for Carlinville High School and college.

Marge directed many plays, was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing cards, solving crossword puzzles, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals.

Marge is survived by her children, Jude (Steve) Jones of O’Fallon, MO, Robert (Meloney) Deffenbaugh of Chatham, Rebecca Hunt of Springfield; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Christopher Deffenbaugh and five brothers.

Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, prior to services.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 24, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, followed by the Memorial gathering and ceremony at 12 p.m., with Celebrant Parian Hull officiating. Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery.Memorial
