There is a new track and field queen in Carlinville.
Last weekend, Carlinville High School senior Hannah Gibson became the first Cavalier since Kelsey Card to bring home a state championship medal at the IHSA Class 1A finals.
Gibson made a career-best throw of 141 feet and eight inches to clinch the title in the same event which Card built her legacy.
Gibson joins elite company alongside Card, who set the all-time IHSA discus record at 167 feet and four inches in 2010, won a Big Ten Championship at the University of Wisconsin, then went on to represent the United States in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.
Gibson landed the fifth girls’ state title in CHS’ storied track history, following in the footsteps of 1988 800-meter champion Theresa Baker, 2004 high jump champion Cassie LaMar, Card (who was a four-time discus champion from 2008 to 2011), and two championship relay teams from 1988 (800-meter) and 2003 (4×200).
Gibson also qualified for the shot put finals and placed 12th overall with a 36-5.75 score.
Gibson will be furthering her academic and athletic career as a Division I athlete at Illinois State University.

In other action, Emma Crawford won four medals for North Mac and Lilly Trettenero became Staunton’s first state medalist since 2019.
Crawford set a new school record in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.73s and placed third overall. She also finished fifth in the long jump (5.3m), fifth in the 300m hurdles (45.85s) while helping the Panthers’ 4×100 relay team take home sixth place. Crawford was joined in the 4×100 by Kaelyn Swift, who additionally placed 12th overall in the 100-meter dash, Lakin Whited and Addison Cole. North Mac’s final time was 50.01s.
Trettenero got sixth place in the pole vault finals at 3.2m to conclude her Staunton High School career. Asher Ronan of North Mac also qualified for the finals in this event and placed 14th (2.45m).
Though she didn’t medal, Carlinville sophomore Payton Harding still had a successful meet, setting a personal record in the shot put at 10.93m for 15th place. She additionally ranked 23rd in the discus at 33.72m.
