HS girls’ soccer: Carlinville defeats Gillespie and Southwestern

Staunton’s undefeated run ends with conference loss to Litchfield

The Carlinville High School girls’ soccer team picked up two conference victories over county rivals Gillespie and Southwestern.

On April 17, the Cavaliers defeated the Miners, 4-2. Jordyn Loveless led the CHS scoring attack with a pair of goals and assisted on the other two goals, which were scored by Evee Whitler and Mylee Ribble. Lainey Edwards and Sloane Brawner found the back of the net for Gillespie in defeat. The Miners are in the middle of a rough stretch with seven straight losses, including one which they had to forfeit against Pana on Apr. 10.

Gillespie, which additionally drew SCC losses to Greenville Apr. 15 and Hillsboro Apr. 21, is 2-7-1 overall and 0-4 in SCC play.

On April 21, Carlinville improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the SCC with a 7-0 pummeling of Southwestern. Loveless and Whitler both scored hat tricks (three goals apiece) and Sophia Campbell rounded out the attack with a goal of her own. Defensively, the Cavaliers accomplished their eighth shutout of the season and kept the Birds on their side of the field all afternoon. Carlinville went the entire match without allowing a single Southwestern shot at the net. The Piasa Birds fell to 3-8-1 overall and 1-3 in SCC action with the loss.

Southwestern was also defeated handily by Litchfield, 10-0, Apr. 15 and Pana, 4-0, Apr. 17 prior to its rough date at Carlinville.

Other action

In other action, Staunton’s unbeaten run ended at 10 games with a 4-1 home conference defeat against Litchfield Apr. 17. Jillian Meyer scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal in the first half and Madelyn Davin made 15 saves in the loss. The Purple Panthers scored three unanswered goals in the second half to humble the Dogs, who hadn’t allowed a goal since defeating Litchfield, 4-1, at the LHS Panther Classic Mar. 31. Earlier in the week, Staunton (10-1 overall and 2-1 SCC) extended its temporary winning streak with victories over Jacksonville, 1-0, Apr. 12, North Mac, 9-0, Apr. 15 and Roxana, 1-0, Apr. 16.
