Last weekend, Chaz Oberkfell of Gillespie and Mason Gilpin of Carlinville medaled at the IHSA Class 1A boys’ state track meet in Charleston.

Oberkfell closed a storybook sophomore season with a seventh place finish in the 1600-meter run and 10th place ranking in the 3200-meter. Oberkfell, who had won every single one of his races en route to state, ran the final 1600-meter race in 4:27 and closed with a time of 9:53 in the 3200-meter.

Gilpin placed fifth in the pole vault finals with a 4.20m launch.

Gilpin’s teammate, Austin Homer, also qualified for state in the pole vault but was unable to clear the bar for an official score.
The same fate occured for North Mac’s Ozzie Maddox in the finals of the shot put. Maddox was charged with a “foul” for making an erred throw out of bounds.

Staunton competed in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×800 relays. Michael Matesa and Thomas Ogata additionally represented SHS in the individual competitions. However, none of the Bulldogs made it past preliminaries.

Other state qualifiers from Macoupin County that didn’t make the finals included Keagen Greff of North Mac in the high jump and Weston Kuykendall of Carlinville in the discus. Greff ranked 17th in his preliminary and Kuykendall came in 21st.
