HS baseball: Southwestern shuts out Carlinville

On Apr. 24, Ryan Lowis threw a three-hit complete game shutout and the Southwestern High School baseball team defeated Carlinville, 6-0, at Loveless Park.

Lowis, one of six Piasa Birds batters to collect a hit offensively, was crisp the entire afternoon with 63 strikes on 82 pitches and 13 strikeouts. He also finished the game without a walk as Southwestern improved to 6-12 overall and 4-1 in South Central league play with the conference win.

Noah Convery took the loss for the Cavaliers, who fell to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the SCC. Convery allowed three earned runs on four hits while issuing three walks and striking out eight in six innings. The Birds then tagged Noah Byots for two insurance runs that put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh.

Johnny Kunz drove in two runs to lead the Southwestern offense, which additionally got one RBI apiece from Ian Brantley, Isaiah Austin and Owen Gray.

Other action

In other action, Gillespie picked up two wins over Civic Memorial, 11-8, and Bunker Hill, 16-0, while Staunton stomped East Alton Wood River, 15-0, and North Mac lost a nailbiter at Vandalia, 4-3, last week.

Gillespie is 11-7 overall and 3-1 in the SCC.

Staunton is 9-8 on the season and 1-3 in SCC contests.

North Mac is 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the SCC.
