HS baseball: Reese Bohlen throws no-hitter for Staunton, Gillespie dominates Metro East Lutheran

Reese Bohlen took dominant pitching to another level in Staunton’s 7-0 victory at Hillsboro Mar. 31.

Bohlen retired 27 of 29 batters he faced while striking out 17 and firing a no-hitter for the Bulldogs against the Hiltoppers.

Bohlen also scored one of Staunton’s seven runs, which were produced by Drake Billings (two RBI), Ashton Rizzi (one RBI), Aiden Saracco (one RBI) and Carter Legendre (one RBI).

Staunton improved to 5-3-1 on the season with the victory.

Gillespie 12, Metro East Lutheran 1

On Mar. 31, Gillespie only needed five innings to handle Metro East Lutheran.

After the Knights pushed across the game’s first run in the opening frame, the Miners responded with a four spot in the bottom half then piled on with an insurance tally in the third and seven in the fourth.

Jack Kaylor fueled the Gillespie outburst with a pair of singles and had three RBI. Carson Hailstone also plated three runs while Dawson Lancaster and Nathan Haywood each collected two RBI.

Brody Shaw tossed a dominant complete game on the bump, limiting the Knights to one run on one hit while striking out eight.

Gillespie is 3-4 overall.

Other action

In other action, North Mac opened the month of April on a high note as the Panthers picked up their sixth victory in eight games with a 3-1 road win at Carrollton.

Southwestern took a pair of losses against Roxana (8-3) Mar. 28 and Civic Memorial (16-5) Apr. 1. The Piasa Birds are 2-6 on the year.

Carlinville was neck-and-neck at 3-3 with Jerseyville through three innings at Loveless Park Apr. 1, but the Panthers closed the game with six unanswered runs and kept the Cavaliers winless. Carlinville is 0-5 to start the season.
