Behind 470 yards of total offense coupled with several major plays on both sides of the line, the Carlinville High School football team landed a huge 35-28 victory in a gridiron classic at CHS last weekend.

The Cavaliers never trailed in the game and were able to hold off the Comets despite Greenville countering a touchdown lead four times.

The Comets were inches away from taking a late lead down the stretch but the Cavaliers’ defense brought the blitz and flushed Greenville out of the pocket into disaster. Comet running back Dayton Oliver, who had an unreal performance of 295 yards and all four Greenville touchdowns (including 208 yards and three of thoe touchdowns in the first half) was once again the chosen one to deliver, but, Konner Costello and Noah Convery executed a goal line stand when it mattered most and brought down Oliver for a three-yard loss after forcing him to scramble for his life toward the left sideline. Tate Duckels also reversed momentum on the ensuing drive with a key interception at the CHS 20-yard marker with 7:34 to go in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers’ offense then marched down the field on a 14-play 80-yard drive to take the lead for a fifth and final time with less than two minutes left. Joel White punched in the game-winning score with his seventh rushing touchdown in a matter of two weeks. Greenville’s final drive got off to a solid start with a 50-yard kick return to the Carlinville 40, but the Cavies’ defense tightened up again and forced a turnover on downs at the 33 with 54 seconds to go, initiating victory formation.
