John Thomas Turner Jr.

John Thomas Turner Jr, 82, of Carlinville, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025 at St. John’s hospital in Springfield.
John was born at Catching’s Clinic in Woodville, Mississippi to John T. Turner Sr and Edna Earle (Taylor) Turner on June 30, 1942.
His parents owned and operated Turner’s Gulf Grill and Service Station where John worked many long hours in the service/gas station of the business.
John graduated from Woodville Attendance Center in 1960. He continued his education at the University of Southern Mississippi and earned his masters degree in Accounting in 1967. After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi, he was hired by Exxon Mobile in Houston, Texas. John became the Controller of the accounting and financial departments at Monterey Coal Company, a division of Exxon Mobile, in Carlinville. He retired from Monterey Coal Company in December of 2000 and remained in Carlinville until his passing.
John married Elizabeth “Cookie” Ann Denstel on March 3, 1967 at the Woodville Methodist Church, Mississippi.
John was a man of humble beginnings but was rich in wisdom, integrity, kindness and love. He loved unconditionally, gave generously, and forgave easily. He knew the value of hard work, the importance of honesty and the strength of humility.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cookie Turner; daughter, Yvette Denise Turner (Darrin Hartsook) of Carlinville; son, John Thomas “Trey” Turner, 3rd (Jolene Turner) of Chandler, AZ; grandchildren, Danielle Breanna Turner Westnedge, Dawson Turner Westnedge, Waylon Cage Turner, Margaux Weronika Turner; several nieces and nephews.
John was proceeded in death by his parents; brother, James Leighton Turner and sister, Gwendolyn Earle Turner.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Woodville Methodist Church, Woodville, Mississippi.
Funeral and burial services immediately following. John will be buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Woodville, Mississippi.
