HS girls’ soccer: Meyer scores hat trick, Staunton wins season opener

Sophomore Jillian Meyer opened the 2024 high school girls’ soccer season in grand fashion, posting a hat trick on just four shots and leading the Staunton Bulldogs to a dominant 8-0 victory over Maryville Christian Mar. 11.

Meyer was one of five Staunton players to find the back of the net along with Lacie Edwards, Breanna Feeley, Ryenne Duggar and Lydia LaRosa, who scored twice.

Freshman goaltender Madelyn Davin made six saves.

Staunton entered this week as the only Macoupin County team with a win.

Carlinville lost 1-0 to Highland and Gillespie fell 6-0 against Jerseyville Mar. 14. North Mac suffered back-to-back losses against Auburn (7-1) Mar. 12 and Williamsville (9-0) Mar. 15.

Southwestern went 0-3 at the Belleville Metro Cup Showcase against Mater Dei (7-0) Mar. 11, Roxana (7-2) Mar. 12 and Breese Central (4-2) Mar. 15.

Route 66 Kickoff Classic

The Route 66 Kickoff Classic, hosted by Carlinville and North Mac, begins Thurs., Mar. 21 and continues through Fri., Mar. 22 and Sat., Mar. 23.

This year’s tournament features Carlinville, North Mac, Gillespie, Staunton, Lincoln, Greenville, Riverton and Auburn.
On Thursday, Carlinville will host Gillespie at 4:30 p.m. Greenville and Riverton will follow at 6:30 p.m.

First round matchups at Virden are North Mac vs. Lincoln (4:30 p.m.) and Staunton vs. Auburn (6:30 p.m.)

All teams will return to their assigned locations Friday evening. Consolation bracket play begins at 4:30 p.m. and the championship semifinals get underway at 6:30 p.m.

All games on Saturday will be played at Carlinville. The seventh place contest begins at 9 a.m., followed by the fifth place, third place and championship matches.
