On Mar. 9, the small town of Bunker Hill fulfilled a big dream at Brimfield High School.

The seventh grade Minutemaids rode into the Illinois Elementary School Association state finals on a roll and never slowed down until they were the last team standing in the 2A Class.

With the exception of one set loss in the IESA semifinals, Bunker Hill Wolf Ridge played flawless volleyball en route to a victory that would be forever remembered in, not just their community, but Macoupin County as a whole – a state title.

Needing a win to guarantee a spot in the double elimination sector of the IESA finals, the Minutemaids didn’t waste any time. Wolf Ridge dominated Mt. Pulaski from start to finish, 25-12, 25-19, Mar. 8.

Bunker Hill scorched Champaign St. Matthew, 25-9, in the opening set of the state semifinals the next day, but got hit with a humbling 25-22 counterpunch and failed to secure the straight set. But, the Minutemaids refused to let a chance of a lifetime slip away and rebounded with a 25-15 victory to advance to the championship match.

In the midst of all the jubilation, Bunker Hill needed to get re-focused quickly because the job wasn’t finished. Two hours later, they would have to suit up again and survive the ultimate stamina test against their toughest opponent yet.

Mossville entered the state championship game as the favorite with a 25-1 record. However, the Minutemaids were determined to prove that wins are decided on the hardwood and not on paper. Hence, Bunker Hill shocked the world, winning the finale in two sets, 25-23, 26-24.
